Attendance

Attendance and Punctuality Matter

At Hyde High School lots of our students have excellent attendance. There is a strong link between good attendance and academic achievement.  The better the attendance, the more likely students will achieve grades 4 or above in at least 5 GCSE's.

Excellent attendance and timekeeping is a life skill that demonstrates reliability. Future education providers and employers will ask to see school attendance records. We expect all of our students to aim for 100% attendance.

Absence

If your child is going to be absent from school, please ring the school absence line on 0161 366 2675 before 8:45am to let us know the reason for the absence. If you don’t contact school, you will receive a text message and/or telephone call. All absences will be treated as unauthorised unless a satisfactory explanation for your child's absence has been received. Absence can only be authorised by the school.

Medical appointments should be made outside of school time. Routine optician’s appointments, dental check -ups, asthma reviews etc. can all be arranged for after school or in school holidays if managed carefully. If an appointment is urgent or unavoidable you should make sure your child attends school before and after the appointment and we may ask you to provide medical evidence to show that the absence was genuine.

Medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be left at Student Services with your written consent.

Where there are concerns about your child's absence from school or where no reason is provided, the Attendance Officer may visit you at home. If there are concerns about the number of absences or where there are patterns of absence, you will be contacted and invited into school to discuss any support that may be required.

Holidays in Term Time

The law gives no entitlement to parents to take their children on holiday in term time. It states that “headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances

In order for Hyde High School to consider an absence request during term time, you must put the request in writing to the school Attendance Officer including the following:

  • Your child's name & registration group
  • The dates they will be absent from school
  • Detailed reasons as to why you have to go in term time

Any application for leave must only be made in exceptional circumstances and supporting evidence may be requested. Exceptional circumstances are considered on an individual basis; School would not class any holiday during term time as exceptional.

If you choose to take your child on holiday during term time without permission from school then the Local Authority may issue a fine of up to £120 each.
