Governance Arrangements

Tame River Educational Trust

On 1st April 2025, Hyde High School joined the Tame River Educational Trust (TRET), now consisting of three local secondary schools and sponsored by Tameside College.

TRET is constituted as a charitable company limited by guarantee and is registered with Companies House (Company Registration No. 6731528).

The Charitable Company’s Articles of Association is the primary governing document of the Academy Trust.

The Secretary of State enters into a Funding Agreement with the Academy Trust (rather than the sponsor) for the running of the Academy schools.

Local Governing Bodies

Within the Trust, the Local Governing Bodies focus on strategic oversight and key school operations of our individual schools with their respective Headteachers. The Chairs of Local Governing Bodies play an essential role in supporting and challenging each individual school. They focus on the following areas:

  • Outcomes for students and quality assurance.
  • Quality of educational standards and provision (curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and outcomes).
  • Personal development, behaviour and welfare.
  • Leadership and management.
  • Financial and resource management.
  • Health and safety.
  • SEND and pupil premium.

Local Governance at Hyde High School

The Structure of the Local Governing Body

At Hyde High School, this consists of 11 members

  • The Headteacher
  • The Chair of the LGB – appointed by TRET
  • An elected member of staff
  • Two elected parents
  • Six independent members – appointed by the Chair with requisite skills to support and challenge the school leadership team appropriately contributing to the effective governance and success of the school.

The Role and Focus of the Local Governing Body (LGB)

The Local Governing Body (LGB) will maintain a clear and consistent focus on both the quality of education and the school’s financial management, including oversight of budgets and resource allocation. The LGB’s primary role is to address strategic issues—such as setting long-term school improvement goals, monitoring progress towards these goals, and ensuring robust accountability—rather than becoming involved in operational matters like daily timetabling, classroom management, or routine administrative decisions.

Through a balance of strong support and appropriate challenge, governors aim to ensure that Hyde High School achieves the highest possible standards. Strategic examples include reviewing the School Improvement Plan, tracking key performance indicators, and evaluating the effectiveness of policies. Operational matters, such as managing lesson cover or organising after-school clubs, are delegated to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
