SRE

As part of their series of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education lessons, our pupils will take part in Sex and Relationship Education (SRE). At Key Stage 4, SRE content relates to: the nature of committed, stable, respectful, intimate relationships (including marriage; sexual health and contraception; that pupils have a choice to delay sex and enjoy intimacy without sex; and the nature of exploitation and abuse in relationships including coercion; pregnancy choices; and how the use of drugs and alcohol can lead to risky sexual behaviour. Pupils will also investigate the negative impact of pornography on relationships. The purpose of these lessons is to: empower pupils with the knowledge and skills to make informed and healthy choices; to build confidence and skills to deal with situations they may encounter; and to help them to stay safe and know where to ask for help if needed. All content is taught in an age-appropriate way in the context of encouraging aspiration, respectful relationships and personal safety, being able to use correct language, and feeling confident to ask questions and discuss in a mature and appropriate way and access trustworthy guidance. At times, carefully chosen external visitors and speakers may contribute to the SRE programme. In these cases, lesson content is agreed in advance and visitors are always supervised by a member of school staff. Any materials distributed by external agencies will be available for you to view through our school website prior to the element being taught.

If you have concerns or would like to discuss RSE or PSHE further, please make an appointment to speak with our Assistant Headteacher, Mr Thompson.

Careers Support and Transition

Our Year 10 Careers lessons have been carefully planned and scheduled to enable pupils to prepare for effective engagement in mock interviews, careers fairs, college taster days, and application processes, with lessons focussing on CV writing, applications and interview etiquette, career pathways and action planning, how to make use of labour market information, and finance and budgeting.  For more information about careers support on offer in school, please click on our CEIAG tab on the main Personal Development webpage.

Super Learning Days and Curriculum Enrichment

Key Stage 4 pupils have the opportunity to attend workshops to enhance their understanding of PSHE, Careers Education and Citizenship. These opportunities will typically include:

  • Working towards the iDEA (Inspiring Digital Enterprise) Bronze award – an accredited national programme that helps to develop and demonstrate digital, enterprise and employability skills.
  • Basic first aid training and skills delivered by Lifeline Ambulance, including: treatments for common injuries; life- saving skills and CPR; the purpose of defibrillators and when they may be needed; how to make clear and efficient emergency service calls; basic life support; and management of anaphylaxis.
  • ‘MADE’ positive mindset workshop offering the change to learn about how to build self-confidence and development of personal resilience and motivation to strive.

Pupils engage in the democratic process through the nomination of form captains, and the nomination of a school charity. Our Key Stage 4 pupils also have the opportunity to become part of our ‘Student Leadership Team’.

Our school library contains a great selection of recommended reading relating to Personal Development. Pupils who engage in opportunities for independent enquiry related to Personal Development through the school library or through engagement in extracurricular clubs are recognised for their efforts with Personal Development subject badges and access to external visits, such as our London Parliament trip organised by our House of Lords link teacher, Mrs Tong.
